Games have a total of 16 balls, comprising 7 solid, 7 striped, 1 cue ball, and 1 black ball (8 Ball)
The objective is to pot all the designated balls (stripes or solids) and then pot the 8 ball - The game starts with the first player breaking the rack. Rules for the break are the following:
The breaking player has the ball in hand in the kitchen
It is considered a foul if the player fails to pocket any ball and four balls, not including the cue ball, do not touch the rail. On a foul, the opponent receives the ball in hand
If the cue ball scratched on break, the opponent receives the ball in hand in the bottom quarter of the pool table (kitchen)
Breaking player may shoot again if a ball is legally pocketed
After shooting, the game enters the “open table” rules - Rules for the open table are following:
Shooter may hit any ball first
8-ball may be shot first, but the table remains open, and the shooter loses their turn. Any pocketed balls remain pocketed.
Pocketing the 8 ball ends the game as a loss for the shooter.
If a player legally pockets an object ball, they are assigned stripes or solids based on the first pocketed ball. Table switches to normal rules and the player can shoot again - Following are the fouls and the incoming player receives ball in hand:
The shooter scratches
The cue ball does not hit a numbered ball
The cue ball or a numbered ball does not touch a rail or is pocketed AFTER the cue ball hits a numbered ball.
The table remains open. No balls are assigned. - Normal rules for fouls are the following:
The shooter must hit an assigned ball before any others. Hitting a rail before a ball is allowed. Otherwise, the shot is a foul.
After hitting an assigned ball, any ball must hit a rail OR an object ball must be pocketed. Otherwise, the shot is a foul.
Scratching is a foul
If the shot is foul, incoming player receives cue ball in hand - Normal rules for legal shots are the following:
If an assigned ball is pocketed, the shooter continues shooting.
If an assigned ball is not pocketed, the opponent becomes the shooter.
If an unassigned ball is pocketed, and an assigned ball is not pocketed, the opponent becomes the shooter (unassigned balls have no effect).
If an unassigned ball is pocketed and an assigned ball is pocketed, the shooter continues shooting (unassigned balls have no effect) - Player wins or loses the match based on the following criteria:
If the 8-ball is pocketed before all assigned balls are pocketed, the player loses the game.
If all assigned balls are pocketed, legally pocketing the 8-ball wins the game.
If the player fouls while pocketing the 8-ball, they lose the game.
If the player pockets the 8-ball on the same shot as his assigned group, he loses the game.
When pocketing the 8-ball and the player would otherwise win the game, if the opponent's ball is pocketed, the player should still win the game.
